The Price of Website Maintenance. Should You DIY or Outsource It?

Hey you guys…welcome back to another #WebsiteWednesday episode! You really want to know the truth about the price of website maintenance and if you should take on the task or pay someone else to do it for you? Well stay tuned because I am answering all of your questions today.

Let’s look at DIY vs. Outsourcing Maintenance Costs.  

DIY.  Now I know we all like the pleasure of feeling like…I did this…Yo, I did this myself!  

I mean that’s the creative mindset in us all, right?  Factor in the fact that we did it and it was FREE, oh we are on one!  But friend, I want to tell you that it isn’t FREE at all.  First, there are tons of steps to be completed when you are truly performing maintenance on a website.  
 
Things like:  security monitoring and cleanup of spam/comments, inactive users, backups, software updates, analytics, audits, testing, repairing, content edits and so on.
 
Second, your TIME!  The time it will take you to maintain a website.  Think about it, you could use that time to run your business.
 
Now I am not saying that the DIY option isn’t a good thing and that you shouldn’t go that route.  I just want you to be aware and careful of what it truly costs when you choose the DIY route.  
 
Outsourcing. Hiring a professional Website Designer or Developer for outsourcing will ensure that the work is done efficiently and in the most accurate way. PERIOD.  This leads us to the next point.
 
The Benefits of Outsourcing Website Maintenance.
  • If your site goes down, you already have someone to handle it for you.
  • Any alerts or threats you may get at odd times are also handled by someone else.
  • Your website stays fresh with new content.  Nobody wants to revisit a stale website and Google doesn’t care for it either.
  • Your website stays inline with Google’s requirement of best SEO practices and potentially ranks higher in the search engine

Overall friend, when you pay someone a trained professional to handle website maintenance you are setting your brand and your self up to build a better relationship with your target audience.

Maintenance Costs vs. Repair Costs

Oooh this is getting good.  The one the I want to address here first is that when we price for a maintenance plan, we aren’t pricing based off of the fact of the services we are providing.  We are looking at the overall value of the services! *clears throat*

So what should you expect to pay for website maintenance in 2019?

  • Personal website or blog: $15 to $40 per month.
  • Professional website (one that is posting content more frequently): $50 to $75 per month.
  • A company website with multiple forms or requests that requires pretty good speed and security: $100 to $150 per month.
  • e-Commerce websites require top speed and security: $200 to $300
  • Completely custom designed websites are anywhere between $300+ to $1000.

Repair Costs.  This one is HUGE!  If you have paid for a website to be designed and you have abandoned any maintenance on it because well it works, so why should you do anything to it? Right? Nope and no.  That is foolish and can be super costly in the event that your website goes down.
